Hi, I’m Emily Emerson, M.A., LMFT, GTC.
Those are a whole bunch of letters that just say I have a Master of Art in Couple and Family therapy, I am a fully licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Washington (LIC#LF 70063725), and that I am Geek Therapy Certified.
Beyond these though, I am also a nerd, geek, wife, mom to my cats Miqo’te and Mellie, avid watcher of anime/western cartoons (Frieren is amazing and I am super into Owl House at the moment), collector of TCG’s, and player of MMO’s (FFXI has it’s talons back into me). I also build gunpla with my partner, and enjoy getting outside when the sun and pollen aren’t trying to ruin my day.
I take a humanistic approach to therapy, that while there are foundational models and interventions always in the back of my mind, we are also just two or more humans sitting in a room together and that is the important work.
Reflecting on the patterns and stories we learned growing up is just as relevant as reflecting on why we chose the ending we did in Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 and why it was the right one for us.
I’d love to chat with you and see how bringing our various identities together can help you start a new journey in life.
Working with me
Working with me will hopefully feel like having a conversation with someone who gets you - except you will leave with questions about yourself, your beliefs, and the story you want for your life. I talk about stories a lot because I believe in the power of words. That the stories we hear from our families, friends, the media we consume, and the world around us shape our reality. They teach us what “should” or “shouldn’t” be, what is right or wrong.
But I often find that these stories are thin and basic. They miss the details and the beauty of life. These stories are also typically written for us. Instead I approach my work and life believing that we are all the authors of our own stories. That means we get to set the rules, design the drama, and control who gets to read our stories.
This isn’t an avoidance of our reality. We are currently living with the rise of fascism, inside a capitalistic hellscape, and watching the persecution and murder of friends, loved ones, and other humans for trying to exist. This is a reality unfortunately, but within this reality we can still control how we want to live our life. Who we share our stories with and be witnessed by those who get it.
